Sendy Review: The Best Self-Hosted Email Autoresponder Application
After a very long run with Aweber, I finally ditched my account to embrace Sendy which I have bought since December 2016 but couldn’t get to work due to configuration challenge back then. Or let me say because I was so much in love with Aweber and scared of change.
Why I Quit Aweber
Some months ago, I needed to take a break from sending newsletters to my list to focus on life and some other businesses. At first it wasn’t a problem for me to be paying those huge bills every month but when the bills continue to come from that end without it giving me any profit back, I realized it’s not worth it.
My first move was to export a large part of my list and deleted them from the system in Aweber but that reduced my bills drastically but it still wasn’t enough. So, I contacted their support and they gave me an option to suspend my account but keep every information intact. The deal is cool but I was still paying 10% plus they will me $.10 per email (that’s $10 to send to 100 email list) to send newsletters in that plan.
I ran with that for a few months as well but I just had to quit because it makes no sense for me to be wasting my money.
Then one day, I saw an article online talking about how one can send 1,000,000 emails in a day for just $100. I went through the article and realized it was about using Sendy and Amazon SES. I was about to purchase sendy but my mind kept telling me that I already had a license, so I went to check my email and voila!!! I had one.
So, I followed the instructions on their website here. I installed the script on one of my unused domain names and also connected it to one of my shared hosting. At first I connected it to mailgun SMTP but later I was approved on Amazon SES. And I can tell you that from that time to now, I haven’t spent up to $100 on my newsletters.
Sendy is a self-hosted email newsletter application which allows you to send emails via a third-party service like Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) or through an SMTP service mailgun, sendgrid, etc. With Amazon SES, you will be able to send email newsletters at extremely cheap cost.
Don’t get it twisted; Sendy will be able to do almost everything you do with Aweber, Getresponse, etc. It is just a hidden gem
Although, I have already told you most of the reasons you should get sendy, here are some more reasons to get it:
- It is damn cheap:
The way Sendy works make it to be just simply cheaper than any other autoresponder based service out there. End of story.
- No activity, No Payment:
Apart from your webhosting charges (which is almost nothing depending on what business you run), you won’t be paying any monthly charges if you are not sending newsletter/autoresponders. That for me is the main reason to use Sendy.
- Ease of use:
Sendy is very easy to use. Although, it may be tricky at first especially if you are new to the whole email newsletter something but there are several walkthrough videos on Youtube to get you started.
- Community Forum:
Another thing I loved about Sendy is there online community forum where users of the application interact. You can easily get help in the forum and also learn new things about using the application there. This is unique actually.

How to get Sendy
Sendy is available on Sendy.co. You can click here to buy using my referral link by clicking on the below link
Where to get domain name and hosting
You can get a domain name and also get it hosted on Namecheap if you don’t already have one. A .info will cost you $3 in the first year but about $14 in subsequent years. I do not recommend using a free domain name. This is not good for business. And for the hosting, just take the least plan available. Seriously, I don’t think you need something too great except you have a very huge list and expecting over 5k clicks per day
How To Signup on Amazon SES
Go to https://aws.amazon.com/ses/ and click on Get started. You will be taken to another page where you will be asked to login or create a new account. When signing up, use your normal details (phone number will be called for verification) and add a debit card that has a balance of at least 1 USD.
How to get approved on Amazon SES
One of the major problems people face when trying to use Sendy is getting Amazon SES to increase their limit so that they can send a desired amount of emails per day. This can be a bit hard but there is a simple solution that has always worked for me: Use a blog as your website when applying for the limit increase.
The below video should help:
Another thing you can do is buy an active SES account from someone. I know someone who can get you this for $100. And sometimes I have for sale too, my own price is around that but still be negotiable. You can shoot me an email at email@example.com for the details
There you go!!!
